Philips LED Plant Lighting and Dümmen Orange, an international company engaged in breeding and seedling planting, signed a partnership agreement in April 2016. The cooperation will help both parties to better understand the effects of LED lighting on the growth of new varieties of red roses and other plants. This is only the first step in cooperation between the two parties, and other projects will follow up. The Rose Breeding Company in Kudelstaart has installed a hybrid lighting system consisting of high pressure sodium (HPS) (80 μmol/m2/s) and Philips GreenPower LED top light module (80 μmol/m2/s) in one of the planting areas. The light level reached 160 μmol/m 2 /s.
Provide fill light for red rose varieties
Installing LEDs is the first step in the project. The main goal of the breeding program is to cultivate a new and unique variety of red roses. The first variety for commercial sales is expected to be launched on the market in 2017/2018. At present, the variety is growing under the mixed lighting system, and there are some other varieties that are cultivated at the same time. “High light is good for the growth of red rose varieties. After using Philips LEDs to fill light, our breeding bases have been able to match the most advanced rose growers in the industry,†said Dennisvan Dijk, Rose Product Manager at Dümmen Orange.

In the Netherlands, roses are important ornamental plants. The partnership between Philips LED Plant Lighting and Dümmen Orange will further promote the development of rose cultivation. “For us, there are many benefits to working with international breeding companies. LED lighting is rapidly spreading in the field of rose cultivation
Rose growers are very interested in the Philips GreenPower top light module. Last year, the Wimceco rosebuds and Scheers flowerbeds in Belgium invested in LED lighting to complement the high-pressure sodium (HPS) lighting. LEDs improve plant quality and yield, and in the cloudy days of spring and summer, growers can also choose LED as a supplemental solution. The Dutch rose nursery Porta Nova is also particularly looking forward to improving the quality of roses in the LED test. The Delphy Improvement Centre in Bleiswijk is also conducting a 100% study on the use of LED lighting to cultivate roses.
