China has used facial recognition technology to prevent toilet paper from being stolen and strayed. But many industry sources say that speech recognition is a better and cheaper way to authenticate.
Recently, the Guizhou Provincial Government, Tsinghua University and a company jointly announced that they are cooperating on a pilot project to link unique voice features with people's identity card information, and to create, maintain and protect the “voiceprint†database. The company’s pilot project is similar to Tencent’s pilot project in Guangzhou last December. The latter allows people to create a digital version of their identity card using face recognition technology within the WeChat application. They can then use the digital ID for hotel check-in and airport security checks and more.
The person in charge of the company said that the WeChat pilot project is being carried out in Guangzhou and is at the forefront of public application of face recognition, while Guizhou will be a pilot province for speech recognition, and large-scale applications may be carried out in the future. The company began building data centers in Guizhou this month to store voice data.
Other Chinese companies are also experimenting with speech recognition technology. In December last year, Alibaba announced that it was installing voice recognition technology for ticket machines at all subway stations in Shanghai to verify the identity of office workers. In addition, Keda Xunfei provides voice signature services for medical information in Anhui, and also provides voice recognition services for police stations. According to the Associated Press, as of 2014, outside the Chinese region, government and corporate databases have stored approximately 65 million voiceprints.
Although convenient, these uses of biometrics have raised concerns about privacy issues. However, the industry pointed out that companies only focus on self-verification purposes, such as social security card use, hotel check-in and train ticket purchase. But while voice data belongs to users, businesses and government agencies can access it "for specific business purposes."
