Power Integrations, Inc. (Nasdaq: POWI), a high-voltage integrated circuit for energy-efficient power conversion, announced on October 10 that it has launched its latest generation TinySwitch family of off-line switch ICs, the TinySwitch-4 product line.
The TinySwitch-4 device features line-voltage compensated overload power protection that dramatically reduces the maximum overload power output to the load over the entire AC input voltage range. The device integrates a 725 V MOSFET to easily degrade 80% of the high reflected voltage and high bus voltage designs. With 5% load point efficiency above 70%, the designer can meet the stringent European standby standards that will take effect in 2013, while the no-load power consumption at 230 VAC is less than 30 mW, which can meet the current market An urgent requirement for energy conservation.
The line voltage compensation overload power protection feature of the TinySwitch-4 IC is especially useful for applications such as PC standby and appliances, where high current requirements for loads can often be represented as faults. The power supply takes fast action to limit the current to the maximum design value, which provides protection to the circuit and enhances the overall safety and reliability of the system. The BP/M pin allows the MOSFET current limit to be adjusted up or down to allow the designer to optimize power output capability and efficiency in different physical implementations. The on-time extension feature maintains output stability at lower input voltages, enabling longer-than-time input capacitors to meet hold-time. In addition, the TinySwitch-4 device features a latched output overvoltage protection (OVP) feature that configures a fast AC reset by connecting the EN/UV pin resistor to the AC input line. The automatic restart is improved to ensure that the output power during an output fault is limited to 3% of the full load rating.
Chris Lee, Product Marketing Manager, Power Integrations, said: "TinySwitch is synonymous with excellent standby efficiency and ease of design. The high integration and comprehensive system-level protection of the TinySwitch-4 IC makes power supply design extremely simple and easy to meet. Safety regulations can also meet all current and proposed energy efficiency standards, such as ENERGY STAR EPS V2.0 and European Commission energy-related product eco-design directive Tier 2. More importantly, TinySwitch-4 IC and existing TinySwitch-III The device's pins are compatible, simplifying the design work for newer upgrades."
