Analog, mixed-signal and non-volatile memory supplier Catalyst Semiconductor has added a fractional charge pump LED driver based on its patented Quad-Mode architecture, making it ideal for portable applications. The new CAT3637 focuses on high power efficiency and an easy-to-program LED control interface that is 10% more efficient than a normal 3-mode charge pump LED driver and features a single-wire EZDimTM (single-wire programmable interface that allows users to interface through this interface) The IC performs a complete programming and dimming control) interface.
The CAT3637 is suitable for applications with 5 or 6 LED channels per group. Typical applications include large-screen backlight drivers in portable products. This IC simplifies Catalyst's easy-to-use single-line EZDim interface and supports 16-level dimming output from 0mA to 30mA with 2mA resolution for brightness adjustment. With up to 92% power efficiency, no additional capacitance, and an ultra-thin 3x3mm TQFN package, the CAT3637 with Quad-Mode architecture can further reduce PCB board space and cost for next-generation portable applications.
Scott Brown, vice president of semiconductor marketing at Catalyst, said, "When it comes to LED-based products, we can see a wide range of solutions for customers or applications. The CAT3637 is the fifth Quad-Mode-based architecture of Catalyst. Our product, our strategy is a "one-stop" supplier - a wide range of LED driver products for different customer needs."
In addition to the CAT3637, other members of the Catalyst Quad-Mode LED driver family include the CAT3604V quad-channel LED driver with PWM dimming interface, the CAT3636 six-channel LED driver with single-line EZDimTM interface, the CAT3644 quad-channel LED driver, and the CAT3643LED three-channel LED driver.

About Quad-Mode
Catalyst's patented Quad-Mode adaptive fractional charge pump technology takes the performance of LED-driven devices to a whole new level, increasing efficiency by 10% over conventional devices without adding additional capacitance and expense. Devices with a Quad-Mode switch architecture have a power efficiency of up to 92% and an average power efficiency of 84% over the life of the Li-Ion battery, saving board space and cost.
Catalyst Semiconductor's innovative Quad-Mode charge pump architecture not only provides high efficiency similar to inductive LED drivers, but also avoids excessive thickness and EMI interference with inductors. Most of today's charge pump LED drivers are divided into three operating modes based on the ratio of output voltage to input voltage: 1x, 1.5x, and 2x. The CAT3636's Quad-Mode architecture adds a fourth mode of operation, 1.33x, and eliminates the need for additional capacitors. The 1.33x boost mode also reduces ripple current at the battery side, minimizing system power supply noise - an important parameter in portable devices such as cell phones.
