Not long ago, Lei Feng network interviewed Pinta Studios (Ping Tower Studios) and found that there are not many domestic teams dedicated to VR animation, but some foreign Pixar "old drivers" have spoken in the field of VR animation one after another, intends to use VR for traditional animation Make new attempts. This year, related animation works are gradually presented. Before you see the works, you may wish to check with Lei Fengwang to see who they are.
Oculus Story Studio
In January 2015, Oculus became a division of Oculus Story Studio, focusing on VR animation production. They invited Rob Stromberg, the director of the "Sleeping Charm," as their invited director, and before he directed the film in 2015, Stromberg was responsible for visual effects and artistic instruction. His works include "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland." Wait. His creative director was Saschka Unseld, who had previously directed the animated short film Love of the Blue Umbrella at Pixar. He also worked at Pixar and directed Max Planck at Cars 2 as technical director.
At present, the studio has launched two works, "Lost" and "Henry," which are already available for download at Oculus Home. “Lost†tells a story about a giant robotic arm looking for a body in the forest. However, the companion who experienced the work told Lei Fengwang (search for “Lei Feng Net†public number) to wear the Oculus Rift consumer experience. Later, it did not make it clear what kind of story it was told. In addition to the screen and sound effects, it did have some deterrent effect. It can be seen that the first work may still focus on the display of VR technology.
"Henry" chose warmth and tells the story of Henry looking for a friend. Judging from the trailers released earlier, when you wear VR glasses, the hero Henry will stare straight at you. It seems that there is something to say to you and it will produce some emotional communication.
In addition to the above two works, at the Sundance Film Festival in January this year, the studio presented its unfinished third work "Dear Angelica". The story will follow the protagonist Jassica, and she will go through the memories of her mother Angelica. Angelica is an actor, so the scene types include comedy, horror, and children's imagination. The interaction in the story is not like the game, but the audience will move to different spaces by paying attention to different memories.
Interestingly, the work was produced by Quill in the first place. Quill is a drawing tool developed by Oculus that is more professional than Tilt Brush.
Oculus Story Studio will also update blog posts on the official website from time to time to share their problems and experiences in development.
Penrose Studios
Similarly, at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, Penrose Studios exhibited a trailer for Allumette, telling the story of the little girl selling magic matches in the cold wind. It is understood that "Allumette" is the meaning of the match in French, and is also a temporary name when the protagonist does not want to be seen by the outside world and performs alone. At the moment, it is not known exactly when they were released, but their first work, "The Rose and I" based on the "Little Prince" VR short film, is already available for viewing on Gear VR.
The studio was founded in 2015. Founder Eugene Chung also came from Pixar and joined Oculus as the head of the film and media department. Oculus was later acquired by Facebook. He co-founded Story Studio with others and attracted some Pixar. The artists joined. However, he later left to set up Penrose.
The official website of the studio also introduced another important member Jimmy Maidens. He is a CG film producer and previously worked as a technical director of the film at DreamWorks, such as Shrek and Madagascar. He has always been passionate about VR and has collected a lot of VR helmets.
In March of this year, Penrose received an $8.5 million seed round of financing.
Baobab StudiosIn December last year, Baobab Studio won A round of $6 million in financing, led by Comcast Ventures, led by HTC, Samsung Ventures, and Advancit Capital.
The studio’s CEO, Maureen Fan, served as Vice President of Zynga Games and participated in the animation of Toy Story 3, eBay’s product management and UI design. At the same time, Eric Darnell, the chief creative officer, was the director and screenwriter of four Madagascar. Chief scientist Michael Hutchinson and chief technology officer Larry Cutler also have extensive experience in animation.
At present, his production of VR animation works "Invasion! The first episode is already on the line and can be viewed using the Gear VR and Oculus Rift. In the trailer, we can see a big, white, and brightly-eyed rabbit running from a distance and looking at us in front of the camera while also sniffing, while the strange spacecraft on the other lands and walks. Two aliens came down and wanted to launch an attack... As the short film name shows, this work tells the story of the invasion.
Google Spotlight Stories
Unlike the above three, Google Spotlight Stories is not Google's team that specializes in VR animation. It is an application that belongs to the Advanced Technology Products Project Team (ATAP), which is the innovative project retained by Google after Google acquired Motorola. In this application, you can see Google's exploration of new film technologies, especially the 360-degree panoramic video.
In May of this year, Google released the VR interactive animated short film "Pearl", which tells the story of girls growing up with their father's music. In the story, the audience's vision was placed on the co-pilot, and the entire interior of the car could be seen. Along with the background music, the girl also began her growth, but the story revolved around a car. This animation can use HTC Vive to achieve interaction, so that animation does not only stay at the panoramic viewing level.
Apelab
Apelab is a company specializing in interactive story writing. The series of works currently being produced is named "Sequenced". It is divided into three quarters and ten episodes per quarter. It will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2016 through the HTC Vive, Gear VR. , Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard and other devices to watch. From the trailer posted on the official website, it can be seen that the animation style is somewhat similar to that of Miyazaki Hayao. It is understood that the inspiration comes from the Wind in Nausicaa Valley (1984). The machines appearing in the scene suggest that The contradiction between science and technology. As for the final experience, we need to wait.
Obviously, VR technology gives these creators new thoughts on traditional movies. Even if everything is still trying, we still expect new surprises.
