Mr. Tong Yu, the word Bo Qian, Manchu. Born in Shenyang, Liaoning Province on October 2, 1900, he studied in the United States in 1925 and entered the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. In the National Architecture Student Competition, he won the second prize of the 1927 Arthur Spayed Brooke Memorial Prize and the first prize of the same competition in 1928. He received his bachelor's degree in 1927 and his master's degree in 1928. After graduating, he worked in the United States for two years and went to Europe to study architecture in 1930.
After returning to China, he served as professor and director of the Department of Architecture of Northeastern University from 1930 to 1931. In the winter of 1931, he joined Zhao Shen Chen Zhi Architects in Shanghai. In 1932, the institute was renamed Huagai Architects. He mainly presided over the work of the studio, and ended the entire business of Huagai in 1952. Since 1944, he has also served as a professor of architecture at the Central University. Since 1949, he has been a professor of architecture at the Nanjing Institute of Technology and deputy director of the Institute of Architecture.
During the Huagai Architects, the main projects designed in collaboration with Zhao Shen and Chen Zhi were the Nanjing Foreign Ministry Building, the Shanghai Grand Theatre, and the Shanghai Zhejiang Industrial Bank. There are about 100 projects that have been redesigned, including Nanjing Capital Hotel, Shanghai Jincheng Grand Theatre, Nanjing Xiaguan Power Plant, Nanjing Zhongshan Culture and Education Center, and Nanjing Geological Minerals Exhibition Hall. In his later years, he was mainly engaged in theoretical and historical research.
He also has "Jiangnan Garden" and "ChineseGarens" ("Chinese Garden"). "GlimpsesofGardensinEastersChina" ("Southeast Garden Villa"), "History of Western Architecture in the Near Hundred Years", "Heavy Paintings, and "Children's Sketches".
Mr. Tong Yu died in Nanjing on March 28, 1983.
