At first, when I saw the scene of "Star Wars", many users thought that this was a movie featuring two first-order stormtroopers and captain Pasma. It was discovered later that this is a completely digital animation, co-produced by Epic Games, Nvidia and Disney's ILMxLAB effects studio.
At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco today, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney and CTO Kim Libreri presented the demo to the crowd. This is the first public demonstration of real-time ray tracing in Unreal Engine 4, which powers many high-quality video games. The result may be that a video game engine like Unreal can be used to make future movies.
Real-time ray tracing is considered the holy grail of creating high-end film images, marking a leap in the convergence of movies and games.
In this event, the three companies demonstrated an experimental film demonstration using Star Wars: the Force Awakens and Star Wars: the Last Jedi. .
The demo uses Nvidia's RTX technology to support the Volta graphics processing unit (gpu), which is available through Microsoft's DirectX Ray Tracing API (DXR).
An iPad running Apple's ARKit augmented reality platform was used as a virtual camera to focus on the details in a close-up view.
Epic used Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Last Jedi to create a computer-generated scene: she wore a special armor with a used chrome and two stormtroopers. The elevator on the first ship hit her.
In the technical demonstration, the lights move interactively through the scene, as ray tracing effects, including shadows and realistic reflections, are rendered in real time. Sweeney says that the image quality of highly reflective surfaces and soft shadows has never before achieved such high image fidelity in Unreal Engine.
Sweeney said: "Ray tracing is a typical rendering process that is usually only associated with high-end offline renderers and hours of computer processing time. Real-time movie quality ray tracing is first and foremost the Unreal Engine, a linear content for media and entertainment. The world, and any market that needs a realistic visual market, is an exciting new development.
Epic Games works closely with Nvidia to support Nvidia RTX technology through the DXR API. It runs on the Nvidia DGX StaTIon.
Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of content and technology at Nvidia, said in a statement, "Over the years, real-time ray tracing has been a dream in the graphics and visualization industry. Working with such great teams as Epic and ILMxLAB, in this shocking real-time We were thrilled with the ray tracing demo. With Nvidia RTX technology, Volta GPUs and the new DXR API from Microsoft, these teams have been able to develop amazing products, which shows that the era of real-time ray tracing is finally here."
