The leading independent grid off-grid solar module supplier OPES SoluTIons and the Fraunhofer Solar Photovoltaic Power Center (CSP) jointly developed an ultra-light solar module O-Lite Plus.
While conventional crystalline solar modules weigh approximately 60 grams per watt, the O-Lite Plus module weighs only about 20 grams per watt. This is equivalent to reducing the weight by two-thirds.
Not only that, the cost of the new frameless O-Lite Plus module in mass production is comparable to the cost of traditional modules.
It has been reported that the back side of the module made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) (on which a single or polycrystalline solar cell is laminated) is primarily responsible for weight reduction. This tried and tested material is also used in rotor blades for wind power industry as well as in shipbuilding and automotive engineering, and is particularly cost effective due to its high throughput.
Robert H?ndel, founder and CEO of OPES SoluTIons, said: "Our partner Gaugler & Lutz's material know-how and years of experience will benefit us. Compared to lightweight substrates such as fiberglass or PCB. The PET material used is lighter, and because of its ease of processing, it has a similar thermal expansion coefficient to solar cells, and the O-LitePlus module is also extremely durable."
Due to the possibility of producing curved modules and their light weight, the O-Lite Plus modules are particularly suitable for weight-sensitive applications such as vehicles, boats and small equipment, which also imposes high demands on durability.
The concept of this module was developed in conjunction with the Fraunhofer CSP. The Institute also provides advice on material selection and is responsible for product and durability testing.
Robert H?ndel continues, “In order to develop O-LitePlus, we combine the research and development capabilities of Fraunhofer CSP with off-grid and production experience. Only through this cooperation can we develop new ultra-light, durable and attractive prices. A new generation of solar modules that are now being demanded by automakers and bicycle sharing providers. As far as we know, O-LitePlus is the world's lightest module."
