Foreign media: The world’s number one technology company club should have Ali and Tencent

【Global Science and Technology Report】 The US "New York Times" reported on August 17th that the technology company clubs with a market value of 400 billion U.S. dollars include Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Amazon. They should now have a place for the two Chinese members.

Alibaba Group and Tencent are now the darlings of global investors. Both companies are listed and their market capitalization is more than double that of technology companies such as Intel, Cisco and IBM. In Hong Kong, Tencent's market value rose more than 400 billion U.S. dollars in early trading on Thursday, and the final figure was 396 billion U.S. dollars. Alibaba had a market value of US$415 billion before the closure of the New York Stock Exchange on that day. The two companies sit on the world’s largest Internet market—China, with more than 700 million users.

Tong Shihao, managing partner of venture capital firm GGV Capital, said: “China has finally reached the era of the Internet to catch up with the United States. He once invested in many startups in China. He believes that the main advantage of Alibaba and Tencent is that the United States still focuses on physical shopping. There are also many entertainment options under the line. However, the attractiveness of China's physical stores is getting weaker. Tencent and Ali, as suppliers of goods and services, play a crucial role in the purchase, payment, exchange, and entertainment of goods.

The advantages of the two scales are also obvious: Alibaba's online shopping app Taobao has more than 500 million active users per month; WeChat's messaging app WeChat has 960 million users. In the past three months, Tencent and Ali’s revenue has increased by more than 50% over the same period of last year. This growth rate even surpassed the same period of Facebook and Google’s parent company Alphabet.

In Silicon Valley, some technology companies even started to learn from Tencent. For example, Facebook imitation Tencent WeChat push articles in the app, WhatsAp emulate WeChat to create real-time intercom function, Snapchat use two-dimensional code to connect social networks. The smartphone culture led by Ali and Tencent is superior to the United States in many ways. Chinese people can use mobile phones to complete many things: browse restaurants, shop online, pay utility bills, rent bicycles, and even buy funds.

Most of Ali's revenue comes from advertising and its shopping platform in China, and Tencent relies on games like League of Legends to make money, and most of its revenue comes from games and advertising. Last year, Tencent acquired Supercell, the production company of the "Clash of Clans" game for $8.6 billion. At present, the world's most profitable smart phone game "Glory of the King" users far more than "Pokemon" Pokémon Go, this game also belongs to Tencent.
