Overview
The MAX1889 provides the three regulated outputs required for active-matrix thin-film transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT LDCs). It integrates a high-performance boost converter with two linear regulator controllers and multi-level fault protection circuitry to form a complete power system.
The main dc-to-dc converter is a high frequency (500kHz/1MHz), current mode, boost converter with an N-channel power MOSFET that allows the use of ultra-small inductors and ceramic capacitors. With its wide closed-loop bandwidth, the MAX1889 provides fast transient response to pulsating loads with efficiencies of over 85%. The positive and negative voltage linear regulator controllers post-regulate the charge pump output to provide an on/off power to the TFT gate.
The MAX1889 features a unique input switch control that replaces the traditional input fuse and disconnects the load from the power supply when a fault is detected. The fault detector monitors the current of all three regulated outputs and the input supply. In addition, the MAX1889 automatically enters a thermal shutdown state when the temperature exceeds a specified threshold.
The undervoltage lockout of the MAX1889 is set to 2.5V (highest) to allow for input voltage drops under pulsating load conditions while avoiding unexpected actions when the input voltage suddenly changes. In addition, internal soft-start and cycle-by-cycle current limiting mechanisms prevent inrush current during startup.
The MAX1889 is available in a 16-pin thin QFN package with a maximum thickness of 0.8mm for ultra-thin LCD panel designs.
