Recently, China Mobile launched LTE TDD uplink carrier aggregation scale field test in five cities. The test is expected to end in early December, which means that LTE TDD uplink carrier aggregation technology has taken another step toward large-scale commercialization. The scale field test was jointly conducted by China Mobile and Huawei and Qualcomm Incorporated, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated. As the first chipset supplier to support upstream carrier aggregation technology, Qualcomm Technologies' Qualcomm® SnapdragonTM X12 LTE modem has won praises from many industry companies including China Mobile. The Snapdragon X12 LTE modem is a product of Qualcomm Technologies.
At present, with the development of the camera function of smartphones and the increasing demand for user-generated content sharing, operators, users, application developers and OEMs are paying more and more attention to the uplink speed. 4G+ uplink enhancement technology is designed to enable mobile users to share or upload large resolution photos and videos to the cloud in less than half the time of existing 4G LTE TDD networks. While improving the uplink speed, the uplink carrier aggregation technology is the basis for improving the uplink speed. Together with another key technology of LTE-Advanced, that is, downlink carrier aggregation, the connection speed of 4G+ can be greatly improved.
Regarding the importance of uplink speed, ABI Research released data at the beginning of this year. In 2014, the global mobile upload throughput rate reached 6,860 gigabytes. It is expected that by 2019, the uplink throughput rate will reach 60,000 gigabytes, 2014-2019. The annual average growth rate of global mobile upload traffic during the year was 54%. A major factor contributing to this projected increase is the growing demand for smartphone users to share what they see and hear with their family and friends while watching large-scale sports events, concerts and even sightseeing.
Huang Yuhong, vice president of China Mobile Research Institute, said, "The successful completion of the uplink carrier aggregation field scale test marks that China Mobile has begun to enhance the 4G+ user experience in all aspects and continue to improve 4G+ competitiveness. Then we will accelerate the upward movement. Carrier aggregation technology is commercially available. This is an important part of China Mobile's global carrier aggregation boutique network construction and subsequent commercial terminal launch."
Yan Chenxi, vice president of product management at Qualcomm Technologies, said, "The global uplink connection speed demand is growing rapidly, and Qualcomm Technologies will continue to be the driving force for carrier aggregation and 4G+ global growth. Our Snapdragon LTE modems support advanced uplink carrier aggregation technology. We are very pleased to cooperate with China Mobile and Huawei to enable Snapdragon LTE modems to play an important role in the commercial process of uplink carrier aggregation technology and will benefit the entire mobile ecosystem."
Xu Xuebing, general manager of Huawei's TD-LTE field, said, "Huawei system equipment has already been ready for commercialization of uplink carrier aggregation. Now the website can only be upgraded by software upgrade, and the network can be upgraded to LTE-A. The success of the test marks that the upstream carrier aggregation has matured, and formal commercialization is just around the corner. Huawei is looking forward to continuing cooperation with China Mobile and Qualcomm Technologies to help fully implement the 4G+ strategy."
