National Semiconductor Launches Sensor AFE IC

National Semiconductor Corp. announced the release of seven new 24-bit and 16-bit multichannel sensor analog front ends (AFEs), giving system designers a wide range of choices from high performance to low cost, covering channels Configuration, current source, resolution and other options. National Semiconductor's LMP900xx sensor AFE integrated circuit (IC) provides a simple configuration of signal path solutions for connecting sensors and microcontrollers. The solution is intended for high-precision inspection systems for industrial, medical, test and measurement applications. This inspection system is used for monitoring, temperature, pressure, load, force, motion/position and voltage data.

The pin-compatible LMP900xx sensor AFE expands the lineup of LMP90100 products released earlier this year. These products, coupled with National Semiconductor's WEBENCH® Sensor AFE Designer software tool and desktop development system, can help design engineers connect sensors, configure signal paths, optimize designs, and download sensor AFE configuration data for immediate prototyping. At the same time, using National Semiconductor's integrated hardware/software development system, design engineers can complete designs that could take weeks or months to complete within minutes.

System designers can choose from the pin-compatible LMP900xx family of sensor AFEs to meet their specific resolution, channel, and current source requirements. The LMP900xx family uses either a 24-bit or 16-bit sigma-delta ADC with a programmable mux configuration to connect up to four differential inputs, or seven single-ended inputs for any combination of input types. The microcontroller interface is powered through a standard SPI 4-wire serial interface with CRC data link error correction and seven universal I/O ports. Each IC is guaranteed to operate over a temperature range of -40°C to 125°C.

The true background calibration of all gains (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128) of the LMP900xx IC eliminates time and temperature drift and gain drift without sacrificing the measured signal. The gain and sampling rate of the channel can be independently configured, and the selected channel can be automatically, manually, or single-scanned. The IC also provides continuous background sensor diagnostics to detect short-circuit, open-circuit, and out-of-range signals.
