Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LT3760, an 8-channel LED driver that uses a step-up DC/DC controller that can drive up to 45V of 100mA LED strings per channel. Its internal 60V, 1MHz DC/DC step-up controller is designed as a constant current LED driver for up to 80 white LEDs. The LT3760 can drive up to 8 channels with up to 10 100mA white LEDs in series with a single 12V input, while providing over 92% efficiency. Its multi-channel capability makes the device ideal for medium and large TFT-LCD backlighting applications. Its 6V to 40V input voltage range makes the device ideal for automotive, avionics, HDTV, and industrial display applications.
The LT3760 provides ±2.0% (typically ±0.7%) LED current matching to ensure consistent display brightness. Dimming ratios of up to 3000:1 can be achieved by using True Color PWMTM dimming. The programmable 100kHz to 1MHz fixed frequency operating and current mode architecture provides stable operation over a wide range of supply and output voltages while minimizing external component size. In addition, the switching frequency can be synchronized to an external clock. Its thermally enhanced TSSOP-28 package provides a very compact footprint for most LED backlighting applications.
The LT3760 provides a boost mode constant current source with an external N-channel MOSFET switch. However, even when VIN exceeds VOUT, the LT3760 continues to accurately regulate the LED current. The internal boost controller drives up to 8 channels with an adaptive feedback loop with 10 100mA LEDs per channel to regulate the output voltage to slightly above the required LED voltage for maximum efficiency. If any of the LED strings encounter an open circuit fault, the LT3760 will continue to adjust the existing LED string and send a signal to the FAULT alarm pin. If a larger current LED is required, multiple LED strings can be combined, allowing the LT3760 to drive up to 4 channels, with 10 200mA LEDs per channel, or up to two channels, with 10 channels per channel. 400mA LED. Other features include programmable LED current derating based on junction temperature and LED temperature, and programmable output voltage limits when all LED strings are disconnected.
The LT3760EFE is available in a thermally enhanced 28-lead TSSOP package and is priced at $4.25 each in 1,000-piece quantities. The industrial grade version of the LT3760IFE is tested to operate over the -40°C to 125°C operating junction temperature range and is priced at $5.00 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
