(MILPITAS, CA) – Linear Technology CorporaTIon introduces the LTC4282 Hot Swapä controller with energy monitoring, which is dual MOSFET driven for implementation 100A and larger current board design. The LTC4282 slowly powers up the capacitor by controlling the external N-channel MOSFET, ensuring safe insertion and removal of the board from the 2.9V to 33V live backplane, eliminating sparks, connector damage, and system interference. Hot-swappable high-current boards use parallel MOSFETs to reduce voltage drop, but all such MOSFETs require a large safe operating area (SOA) to traverse overcurrent faults. By controlling the path of the two matching current limits, the LTC4282 reduces the SOA requirement for each path by half, reducing the cost of MOSFETs in high current applications (>50A). A phased startup configuration with small SOA MOSFETs in one path and a low RDS(ON) MOSFET in the other path provides additional cost savings. The LTC4282 provides a rugged and compact solution for hot-swap and surveillance applications, especially for servers, network routers and switches, and high-power board applications in enterprise-class data storage systems.
Located at the entrance and exit of the board's power supply, the LTC4282 has an ADC (analog-to-digital converter) with an accuracy of ±0.7% and reports board voltage, current, power, and power consumption through the I2C/SMBus digital interface. In the event of an overcurrent condition, the LTC4282 folds back its current limit of 2% to maintain constant MOSFET power dissipation for an adjustable timeout period. The digitally configured current limit can be dynamically adjusted with load changes and reduces the selection burden of low value sense resistors. The device records the minimum and maximum values ​​of the monitored electrical parameters and issues an alarm when these parameters exceed the 8-bit threshold. The internal EEPROM provides nonvolatile storage for register configuration and fault log data. To prevent catastrophic damage to the board, continuously monitor the MOSFET for abnormal conditions such as low gate voltage and drain-source shorts or large voltage drops.
The LTC4282 is specified for operation from 0oC to 70oC commercial and −40oC to 85oC industrial temperature range and is available in a 32-lead 5mm x 5mm QFN package.
