On the morning of December 3rd, the Fourth World Internet Conference was officially opened in Wuzhen, Zhejiang. The theme of this year's conference is "Developing a Digital Economy, Promoting Open Sharing, and Working Together to Build a Community of Destiny in Cyberspace". The conference has set up 20 sub-forums such as Sharing Economy, Artificial Intelligence, Accurate Internet Poverty Reduction, Network Protection for Minors, and International Cooperation. Li Yanhong, chairman and chief executive officer of Baidu, delivered a speech at the conference. He believes that the demographic dividend of the mobile Internet has ended and artificial intelligence will become a new growth driver.
Li Yanhong speaks at the World Internet Conference
Li Yanhong pointed out: “Artificial intelligence has three driving forces for growth. The first is that new algorithms emerge in an endless stream. The second is that computing costs are declining. Today’s computing power has reached a critical point, which can make many artificial intelligence devices actually available. The number of Chinese internet users is still huge, and the data volume is growing at a high rate."
Li Yanhong also took the automotive industry as an example to illustrate that artificial intelligence has strong vertical integration capabilities. In the coming years, artificial intelligence technology will bring about tremendous changes to the automotive industry. Li Yanhong said: "From real estate to education, health care, logistics, energy, etc., we can think of industries that are constantly changing due to artificial intelligence technology."
At the end of the speech, Li Yanhong said with emotion: “We live in a very great era and have the opportunity to witness and even participate in artificial intelligence. This technological revolution, comparable to the industrial revolution, occurred in the history of mankind. We hope that artificial intelligence will continue to bring about humanity in the future. Surprise."
The following is the speech of Li Yanhong:
Hello, everyone, I'm very glad that I came to Wuzhen a year later. There were no PPTs in the speeches of the previous guests. I think if there is any dry goods, then PPT made it clear. (laugh)
So, please look at a picture first. This picture shows the comparison between the growth rate of Internet users in China and the growth rate of China's GDP over the past decade. We see that ten years ago, Chinese Internet users grew by more than 50%, and today it is actually about 6%. In fact, in the past four years, the growth rate of Chinese Internet users has been slower than the growth rate of China's GDP. What does this mean? It means that the demographic dividend of the Internet is gone. So last year I said here that "the wireless (mobile) Internet is over." Most people don't agree. Many people say that they haven't finished but just entered the second half. This year I saw that people who originally talked about the "second half" started to talk about artificial intelligence, so my next PPT also gives you a talk about artificial intelligence.
The netizen bonus is gone, but the motivation for growth is still there. What is this motivation? It's artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is at a very early stage of development today, much like the growth of the Chinese Internet more than a decade ago. For the growth of China’s Internet more than a decade ago, I’ve talked about one point before. At that time, there were three growth drivers. First, the rapid growth of the number of Internet users, we just saw a 50% growth rate in the first year. Secondly, the continuous increase in the time spent on the Internet, in the past everyone used to access the Internet every day for a few minutes, and later became more than ten minutes. Now it may take several hours. The time for everyone to access the Internet is also increasing. Third, the amount of information on the Internet is constantly increasing. So at that time, the Chinese Internet, including the Internet, had three growth drivers: the increase in the number of Internet users, the increase in the number of Internet users, and the increase in the volume of information on the Internet. These are all driving the continuous and rapid prosperity of the Internet.
Just now, we all saw that after the demographic dividend has disappeared, we have discovered that there is a technological dividend, that is, innovation represented by artificial intelligence will continue to promote the development of the digital economy in the coming decades. Specifically, there are actually three growth drivers and driving forces. The first one is the algorithm. Artificial intelligence, especially machine learning algorithms, has developed rapidly in the past few years. There are various innovations, deep learning, DNN, RNN, CNN, and GAN... There are new inventions. Create it.
The second is computing power, computingpower. Today, the cost of computing is declining, and servers are becoming more and more powerful. In the past, we thought that artificial intelligence was not practical because it would use too much computing power and everyone would feel that it was not economically sustainable. But it becomes available.
The third, data. The production of data is still developing at a very high speed. Especially for the Chinese Internet, it has a very unique place. 750 million Internet users all speak the same language, all of the same culture, and all follow the same Law, such a large crowd, such a large market, such a large data set, and constantly generating new data, it will further promote the continuous innovation of algorithms, as well as the request for updating the computing power.
These three powers are now growing rapidly, so I'm still very optimistic. In the future, the main driving force for the development of China's digital economy is artificial intelligence, and artificial intelligence will develop at a very rapid pace.
Artificial intelligence also has a different place from the Internet in the past, that is, it has the characteristics of strong vertical integration, or the theme of our conference is the fate community of cyberspace. In the past, Internet companies were basically software-based, but today, software, hardware, and services must be combined to achieve their full effectiveness. Taking the automotive industry as an example, the automotive industry is a century-old industry, but today it has undergone tremendous changes due to the development of artificial intelligence technology. This change will not only affect the depot, but will also affect many upstream and downstream industries. Whether it is a taxi service provider or a chip manufacturer, such as Intel, NVIDIA, or a Tier1 supplier, such as Bosch, China, or a vehicle manufacturer, there are more than 200 vehicle manufacturers in China, and Ford and Daimler abroad. Le has also joined the Baidu Apollo open platform. Many upstream and downstream companies and many areas will benefit from it, or they will all be threatened by the development of artificial intelligence technology. The automobile is a very large industry, which accounts for about one-sixth of GDP in China. Such an industry will undergo tremendous changes in the next few years under the same conditions of a hundred years. It can be imagined that the promotion of artificial intelligence technology to the real economy and to all walks of life is obvious. Actually, I just use the car as an example. Every industry that we can think of will change because of technological innovation. It will change because of the continuous evolution of artificial intelligence technology, from real estate to education, medical care, logistics, energy, etc. The industries that we can think of are constantly changing because of the technology of artificial intelligence.
In this sense, I think we actually live in a very great era. We have the opportunity to witness and even participate in artificial intelligence. This technological revolution, comparable to the industrial revolution, takes place in human history. Everyone will feel surprised and change. We also expect that the advancement of artificial intelligence technology will bring continuous surprises to all of us. Thank you all.
