In a standard environment where gas molecules and solid surfaces coexist, a large number of collisions occur every second. However, the interaction of molecules and solid surfaces during a collision may not be exactly as you might imagine.
When a molecule approaches and strikes a solid surface from any direction, two things happen. Or the molecules bounce back like billiards hitting the pool table mat or the molecules stay on the solid surface. This residence time on the surface is very short and then detaches from the surface at an angle independent of the angle of impact. The latter phenomenon occurs more frequently than the former.
Since the molecules repeatedly hit the solid surface and stay for a short time, the concentration of the gas on the solid surface is higher than that in the gas phase. For gas molecules, this phenomenon is called adsorption. You can think that when the surface is exposed to gas, the gas molecules will adsorb under any circumstances. Careful observation of the surface of the molecular adsorption reveals that the compositional analysis of the solid material and the molecules on the adsorption are vibrating. This vibration exists because the average kinetic energy (motion) of the molecule is zero only when the absolute temperature is zero. The adsorbed gas molecules contact the adsorption point and rest on the "reaction" surface until they are released back into the disordered gas. Adsorbed molecules may collide with many other adsorption sites before they leave the surface. The frequency and intensity of surface motion is directly related to the temperature of the solid surface and the kinetic energy of the molecule.
