HP has redesigned the VR backpack computer concept introduced last year and is now ready to sell the computer. The Omen X compact desktop Omen X Compact released today by HP is a surprisingly slim and lightweight gaming machine that can be bundled on the user's back. This idea sounds weird, but several companies have been experimenting with a design approach that allows players to walk freely in virtual reality without being dragged by many cables connected from the VR headset to the PC.
HP has made some design changes since its first launch of a backpack computer last year. One of the most important changes is the introduction of a docking station design that converts it into a standard desktop computer. This solves the biggest problem with the concept computer. The PC is no longer used only for VR. Users can now turn into a desktop gaming PC through the docking station. Or perform general calculations. The user can operate without a docking station, but the docking station allows the user to connect a desktop monitor, keyboard, and other accessories to make it easier to use.
The HP Omen X Compact uses a Kaby Lake i7 processor and a GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. The Omen X Compact computer is sold separately from the dock, with a stand-alone computer starting at $2,499 and backpacking accessories starting at $599.99. Both will be launched in July.
