American Hospital Uses VR to Develop Real Virtual Operating Room

Los Angeles Children's Hospital recently collaborated with British artificial intelligence (AI) company AiSolve, a Hollywood-based visual effects company Bioflight VR, and Oculus to create a VR training system for emergency pediatric trauma.

Simulated operating room

This VR simulation aims to create a cost-effective, realistic and reliable training plan instead of using a traditional human model. The mannequin is usually quite expensive, and the hospital costs about 430,000 U.S. dollars a year to train mannequins, which is also very time consuming.

Therefore, a program team at AiSolve assumed a medical environment and used AI to create a virtual world. Students could make decisions based on virtual patients, virtual medical personnel, and different surgeries, perform surgery, or re-evaluate their decisions. All of these scenarios were developed from real case studies provided by hospital doctors, providing a variety of options and dialogues in virtual reality, various events that may occur in a true pediatric emergency.

Dr. Todd Chang of Los Angeles Children's Hospital said: "On average, we need one hour to prepare a 30-minute dummy simulation and another 30 minutes to clean up. VR allows students to experience learning alone, rather than all In the same room."

As more users participate in learning, development and medical teams will continue to monitor and enhance the virtual world.
